Prix de Rome Dr. Arnold Gesell studies a baby at Yale's child psychology lab - 1940's
Fernandes: "Arnold Gesell was one of the first psychologists to systematically describe and observe the behavior of children, particularly in the first five years of life. At the Yale University, Gesell constructed a very specific laboratory: a one-mirror dome, under which infants could be observed without being disturbed. One of the reasons why I'm fascinated with this image is because the laboratory itself, through its architecture and design, clearly manifests the gaze of the psychologist. Gesell made also use of the latest technology in his research, such as cinema and photography: "We have used the motion picture camera as a scientific tool for charting, month by month, the growth of the infants locomotion (...) manipulation and social reactions. The cinema is an ideal tool for making visible the forms and the structure essence of the mind."'
